Microbiological testing checks whether the water contains bacteria that can cause food poisoning and gastrointestinal illness. It is the basic test for well water, for water after a failure or renovation of the plumbing, and for any water used in a business supervised by Sanepid. In Warsaw and the surrounding area a MICHLOR technician collects the sample on site and takes it, chilled, to the accredited GBA Polska laboratory.
Coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli and enterococci, the indicators used to judge whether water is microbiologically safe. For hot water in buildings the scope is extended to Legionella testing.
After a well is drilled or repaired, after flooding, a failure or a plumbing renovation, when the smell, taste or colour of the water has changed, when there is a baby in the house, and before opening a surgery, a restaurant or a nursery, when Sanepid needs a result.
Into a sterile bottle, after disinfecting the tap outlet and running the water. The sample travels to the laboratory chilled. Taking it yourself in an ordinary bottle easily distorts the result, so a technician certified in water sampling does it.
Usually after 3–4 working days. Bacteria have to grow on a culture medium, and in some determinations this takes 72 hours, so a full result is never available straight away. Legionella results take about 10 days.

A MICHLOR technician comes to you and collects samples in certified containers in line with the PN-EN ISO standard.
The samples go to the GBA Polska laboratory (PCA accreditation no. AB 1467). Physicochemical results usually take 3–5 working days, microbiological results 3–4, and the full package about 5–7 working days.
